HOW TO READ THIS
The number that matters isn't the deposit — it's the exposure.
Notional exposure is the market value your stake controls — level × stake = exposure — and it is the number your losses are calculated on. Margin required is merely the deposit your provider takes, using FCA minimums by asset class. At 50% of required margin, providers must close retail positions.
Losses land at full-exposure scale. Excludes overnight funding, dividend adjustments and slippage — and without a guaranteed stop, a loss can exceed the margin deposit. FX tip: enter levels in points, not the raw rate — GBP/USD 1.3500 is 13,500 points.
Size stakes from your maximum acceptable loss — the position-size calculator works that way round, and risk management (chapter 11) explains why.
